Toronto Bathroom Interior Design
An accessible bathroom renovation in Toronto, thoughtfully designed to support independence, comfort, and everyday functionality without compromising on style. Modern finishes, custom details, and a spa-inspired atmosphere bring beauty and practicality together.
Project Overview
This Toronto bathroom renovation was designed around an important priority: creating a beautiful, functional space that supports the homeowner's accessibility needs while maintaining independence and comfort.
One of the homeowners required additional accessibility considerations, including the ability to independently access the shower using a walker and comfortably approach the vanity using a wheelchair or walker.
Barbara approached the project by carefully considering how the bathroom would be used every day, ensuring that accessibility, ease of movement, and thoughtful design were integrated into the renovation from the beginning.
The result is a modern, fresh bathroom with textural finishes and an inviting spa-like ambience, demonstrating that accessible design and sophisticated interiors can work beautifully together.
Design Goals & Functional Considerations
The primary goal was to create a bathroom that would provide maximum accessibility without sacrificing aesthetics.
Several important design decisions shaped the space:
- Roll-in Shower Accessibility: A roll-in shower was incorporated to allow the homeowner to independently access the shower using a walker. - Custom Accessible Vanity: A custom-designed vanity provides open space underneath the surface, allowing someone using a wheelchair or walker to get as close to the sink as possible. - Thoughtful Faucet Placement: The lever faucet was positioned on the left side of the vanity to minimize reaching and make everyday use easier. - Comfortable Movement: The bathroom was planned around accessibility, ease of movement, and the homeowner's everyday requirements. - Style Without Compromise: Modern, fresh, and textural finishes create a welcoming, spa-inspired atmosphere while supporting the functional needs of the homeowners.
Design Approach
Barbara believes that successful interior design begins with understanding how people actually live and use their spaces.
For this project, functionality was central to every design decision. The accessibility requirements were carefully considered alongside the overall aesthetic direction, ensuring that the bathroom would feel comfortable, inviting, and visually cohesive.
Rather than treating accessibility as an addition to the design, the goal was to integrate it naturally into the space.
Every detail, from the shower access to the custom vanity and faucet positioning, was considered with the homeowner's independence and daily comfort in mind.
Materials, Finishes & Details
The bathroom features a modern, fresh, and textural design direction.
The selected finishes create a calm, inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a relaxing spa, bringing warmth and visual interest into the space.
The design demonstrates how practical requirements can coexist with carefully considered materials, finishes, and details.
The overall result is a bathroom that feels contemporary, comfortable, and welcoming while remaining highly functional for its homeowners.
