Toronto - Custom Family Room
A custom family room design in Toronto, with custom millwork and comfortable seating planned for relaxed, everyday family living.
Project Overview
Barbara designed this custom room around how this family actually spends time together, with custom millwork and seating that support everyday use rather than a formal, rarely-used room.
The layout prioritizes comfort and circulation, with storage and built-in details that keep the room functional without feeling cluttered. The result is a family room that feels relaxed, personal, and genuinely lived-in.
Photographs of the finished family room are shown on this page and in the gallery below.
Design Goals & Functional Considerations
The goals focused on a family room that performs well under daily use. That meant clarifying circulation zones and improving storage so the space stays clear and comfortable.
In most average-sized Toronto homes, where space is often at a premium, every inch was planned to earn its place. Barbara worked with the homeowners to understand how they use the space and prioritized the layout around those habits.
Design Approach
Barbara's collaborative approach kept the family at the centre of the design. She guided the layout, millwork direction, and finish palette while the clients shaped the choices that made the room theirs.
Functionality came first - the seating arrangement and storage were settled before the finishes and details were layered in, so the room lives well before it looks beautiful.
Materials, Finishes & Details
Finishes were selected for durability and warmth, with materials that stand up to daily family use while also feeling inviting.
Specific materials and products are confirmed with each client as part of their project.
